About Us
Neighbors Serving Neighbors
The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company is made up of a group of highly trained volunteers, ready to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Volunteers live within one mile of Glen Ellyn, and for no compensation they serve the community, responding to an average of 1,400 calls a year.
Because the company is volunteer-based, it saves the village $8 million+ annually. Serving with the company is an excellent way to support both your neighbors and your community as a whole. Every volunteer receives thousands of hours of training to prepare them as first responders in emergency situations.
Location
The GEVFC operates out of two locations—Station 61 (headquarters) at 524 Pennsylvania Avenue and Station 62 at 681 Taft Avenue. The service area includes a population of over 27,700 and covers an area of approximately 6.76 square miles.
History
In 1906, the Glen Ellyn Hotel was struck by lightning. After this incident, members of the community recognized a need for a local fire department that could swiftly step in when there was a need. The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company was established in 1907 to protect the lives and properties of the Glen Ellyn community. Since then, the company has served the area, stepping in for everything from structure fires and motor vehicle accidents to community education and outreach.
